In 2021, The Leisure Cilantro Society began collaborating with Common Ground High School at the school’s annual Spring Seedling Sale to host a free community seed swap.
This seed swap encouraged those attending the seed sale to celebrate the beautiful diversity of these tiny living things that become food we eat!
We encouraged gardeners and community members to share flower or vegetable seeds collected from their gardens to share with one another. As seeds made way from one home to another, we also encouraged folks to write stories about the seeds they brought. Some seeds were passed down two generations. Others traveled across oceans!
While we asked folks to bring seeds to share and exchange with one another, Common Ground provided lots of seeds and seed varieties as well.
It was a delight for us to talk about different seeds and how to best grow them. We even learned a few things from folks passing by too! Often, as parents were browsing seedlings at the sale, our tables were filled with curious kids eager to collect and package seeds to bring home.
We had more than just seeds at the seed swap! Sophie Duncan provided seed-themed coloring pages, stamps, buttons, and patches for folks to stamp and stomp their seed creations around town.
All the coloring pages, stamps, and patches were hand-made by Sophie Duncan! Illustrations, rubber stamps, and all!
At The Leisure Cilantro Society, so much of our inspiration and creativity is drawn from observing and admiring nature. Whether its the birds and the bees or the plants and the seeds.
We plan activities for the seed swap hoping to share the same nuggets of inspiration and admiration with those who stop by.
